The Audiolingual method

The objective of the audiolingual method is accurate pronunciation and grammar, the ability to respond quickly and accurately in speech situations, and knowledge of sufficient vocabulary to use with grammar patterns. Particular emphasis was laid on mastering the building blocks of language and learning the rules for combining them.

Here are some characteristics of the method:

  • language learning is habit-formation,

  • mistakes are bad and should be avoided, as they are considered bad habits,

  • language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form,

  • the analogy is a better foundation for language learning than analysis,

  • the meanings of words can be learned only in a linguistic and cultural context.

The main activities include reading aloud dialogues, repetitions of model sentences, and drilling. Key structures from the dialogue serve as the basis for pattern drills of different kinds.

We saw the minimum requirements for the formation of a sentence. Now we can look in more detail at the four types of sentence structure.

The 4 Types of Sentence Structure

PRONOUN

Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. We can use a pronoun instead of a noun.

VERBS

a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become, happen.

ADVERBS

Adverbs are a very broad collection of words that may describe how, where, or when an action took place. They may also express the viewpoint of the speaker about the action, the intensity of an adjective or another adverb, or several other functions.

PREPOSITION

A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to."
